The Issue
I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries at age 13 and have lived with extremely heavy periods, severe pain, chronic fatigue, and other debilitating symptoms ever since. In addition to this, I've been diagnosed with endometriosis, with suspicion of deep infiltrating stage four endometriosis affecting multiple organs. My condition has required extensive hormonal treatments, repeated hospital visits and admissions, and ongoing specialist care. The burden of these conditions has also extended into my struggle with fertility.
I call upon the Government and Parliament to provide free sanitary products through the NHS for individuals diagnosed with conditions like endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and adenomyosis. These conditions often result in heavy bleeding, creating a medical need rather than a choice, and should be addressed by supporting essential hygiene needs to ensure dignity, health, and equality.
Approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the UK suffer from endometriosis, causing severe pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and can lead to other significant health problems, including fatigue, fertility issues, and a diminished quality of life. Similarly, PCOS affects about 12-21% of women worldwide, with many experiencing heavy menstrual cycles and excessive bleeding. Women with adenomyosis face similar distressing symptoms. Yet, the financial burden of purchasing sanitary products falls on the sufferers themselves. This creates an undue financial strain on those already dealing with painful and chronic conditions.
By providing free sanitary products through the NHS, we can alleviate some of this financial burden and improve the quality of life for countless individuals dealing with these conditions. This initiative would ensure that no one has to choose between their basic hygiene needs and other essential necessities.
We urge policymakers to recognise the profound impact of these conditions and to act swiftly to provide the necessary support to those in need. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a fair and compassionate change in health policy, ensuring that essential medical needs are met with the dignity and respect they deserve. Please sign this petition to help bring about this critical change.
