The Issue

I was on a train when I witnessed a disheartening incident. A veteran was unable to present a ticket and was told that purchasing one onboard was not an option, even though he had the cash ready. When I stepped in to offer my help by buying a ticket using my smartphone, I was informed that purchasing tickets on the train was not possible. Regrettably, the veteran was then instructed to leave the train at the next station.

This incident illuminated a glaring oversight in our support for those who have served our country. Veterans, who have dedicated their lives to the safety and freedom of our nation, deserve better. Providing them with free public transportation is a small yet meaningful way to express our gratitude and recognition for their sacrifices.

The UK created the Armed Forces Covenant to ensure that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. Statistics show that there are over 2 million UK veterans, many of whom rely heavily on public transport. Offering them free access would not only ease their financial burdens but also symbolize the nation's respect for their past services.

Several countries already provide similar benefits: in the U.S., veterans can travel free on public transport in certain regions,. The UK should follow this examples.

Practical implementation could start with a veteran identification card enabling free travel across trains, buses, and other forms of public transportation. Funding could potentially be sourced from the Department of Transport's budget, with potential partnership support from transportation companies benefiting from increased ridership.

Let us acknowledge the contributions of our veterans by granting them the freedom to travel without cost. It’s a small step that speaks volumes. Please add your signature to this petition to make free public transportation for UK Armed Forces veterans
