The Issue
I served my country with honor and dedication, yet as a veteran, I find myself struggling to receive the basic medical and dental care I desperately need. Accessing dental care, in particular, has been a challenge, and unfortunately, I'm not alone in this predicament. Thousands of veterans across the United States face similar struggles, despite having given years of their lives in service to our nation.
Veterans have risked their lives in defense of our freedoms, and it is heartbreaking to see them not receive the consideration they deserve upon their return to civilian life. While our country regularly expresses gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans, words are not enough. It is time for meaningful action.
Currently, only veterans with a 100% disability rating or those who qualify through specific criteria are entitled to comprehensive medical and dental care under the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. This leaves a significant majority of those who have served without access to essential healthcare services. It is unacceptable that veterans who have fought bravely for our country are left worrying about how they will afford their next medical or dental appointment.
Expanding access to free medical and dental care for all veterans is not just a matter of goodwill, it is a national obligation. Evidence suggests untreated dental issues can lead to severe health complications, including cardiovascular diseases, while untreated medical issues can dramatically reduce a person’s quality of life. Investing in comprehensive healthcare for veterans not only restores dignity but can lead to long-term cost savings by preventing more severe health issues down the road.
We are calling upon Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs to reassess their healthcare policies and implement a system where all veterans, irrespective of their disability rating or discharge status, qualify for free, comprehensive medical and dental services. Such a policy would reflect our true appreciation for their sacrifice and ensure they receive the care they need and deserve.
Join me in advocating for our heroes by signing this petition. Together, we can send a powerful message that our veterans’ health and well-being should be a national priority.
