Provide free fully funded BSL lessons to all registered deaf individuals

The Issue

As someone who registered as deaf, I experienced a deeply concerning situation that highlighted a significant gap in our system. Before receiving my first pair of hearing aids, I was admitted to the hospital for an emergency. Unfortunately, I could not hear what the doctor was saying and despite my requests, he refused to write down the instructions. This left me completely unaware of the medications I was being given or the procedures being performed.

This situation could have been different if I had been able to learn British Sign Language (BSL) and access an interpreter. BSL provides a means of communication for those of us who cannot rely on hearing alone. It's not just my story; many others face similar challenges because they haven't had the opportunity to learn BSL. This lack of communication leads to feelings of vulnerability and anxiety, particularly in critical settings like hospitals.

Globally, individuals registered as deaf shouldn't have to bear the cost of learning the language that enables them to communicate effectively. Given its pivotal role, learning BSL should be a right, not a privilege—a course made available free of charge to all who need it.

Incorporating BSL learning as a part of school education would also foster inclusiveness and understanding from a young age, creating an environment where the hearing and non-hearing communities can interact more harmoniously.

Action is urgent and necessary. We must urge policymakers to consider implementing free fully funded BSL courses for registered deaf individuals and integrate BSL learning into school curriculums. Enabling equal access to communication not only empowers the deaf community but also enriches our society as a whole.

Please join me in supporting this crucial initiative to ensure no one faces unnecessary isolation due to a lack of communication support. Sign this petition to make a real change today.
