The Issue

As CU Boulder students passionate about community empowerment, we embarked on a business class project aimed at making tangible contributions to our society. Our focus soon gravitated towards the critical issue of homelessness in our city, Boulder, and the harsh challenges our unhoused neighbors face, particularly during the unforgiving winter months.

Despite being rich in history, culture, and community spirit, Boulder endures a persistent crisis: its homeless population is highly vulnerable to the unyielding cold of Colorado winters. Through exhaustive research and conversations with local aid organizations, we have come to understand that immediate interventions can save lives. With temperatures plummeting, hundreds of unhoused residents face grave dangers due to exposure. This is not just about discomfort; it's a matter of survival.

We call upon the Boulder City Council to take swift and compassionate action. We urge them to allocate emergency funding for the acquisition and distribution of essential winter gear—including jackets, gloves, blankets, and sleeping bags—for those who are most in need. Collaborating with local charities and organizations can ensure that this funding is used effectively and reaches the people who need it most.

In the financial year 2019-2020, Boulder's budget exceeded $350 million, yet the available assistance for our homeless population remains insufficient. We believe that by reallocating a small fraction of these resources, many lives can be positively impacted. Research, such as that conducted by the National Coalition for the Homeless, underscores the importance of winter gear in preventing exposure-related fatalities.

We believe this is a pivotal time for action—a moment where our choices reflect our values as a welcoming and compassionate community. With your signature, you become an advocate for life-saving changes. Help us turn our project into a mission of warmth and hope. Sign this petition to urge the Boulder City Council to act now, for among the many great things our city stands for, no individual should be forgotten in the cold.
