The Issue

I'm writing this petition because of the heartbreaking situation unfolding at Philadelphia's Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) High School. Female students, simply trying to get an education, are being stopped and locked into a secluded room due to the clothes they wear. This practice is not only unfair but chips away at the dignity and self-esteem of young women who should be nurtured, not punished.

In a school that prides itself on creativity, diversity, and inclusivity, it is shocking to witness the enforcement of such a discriminatory dress code. Overly policing young women's clothing choices sends a damaging message that their appearances are more important than their education or talents. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, strict dress codes disproportionately target female students, and this is a direct violation of Title IX, which protects against gender discrimination in educational institutions.

Moreover, being detained against their will is both a violation of personal rights and an unjustifiable action that goes against the principles of a safe educational environment. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has highlighted numerous cases where such practices don't just impede learning, but also promote a toxic atmosphere.

We believe the administration needs to enact a more balanced and fair dress code policy that respects the rights of all students. This includes:
1. Revising the current dress code policy with input from students, teachers, and the community.
2. Implementing training for staff on appropriate and respectful enforcement of dress code rules.
3. Ensuring no student is detained or humiliated because of their attire.

We urge CAPA High School's administration to reconsider their current policies and prioritize the education and well-being of its students over outdated and discriminatory practices. Please join us in supporting this cause for equity and justice by signing this petition.
