Petition to Protect Zen Cafe and Coco, the Emotional Support Dog: 

We, the undersigned, stand in support of Zen Cafe and their emotional support dog, Coco.

Zen Press Cafe is a small, community-centered cafe that provides more than just food and drinks. It offers a safe, calming space for people seeking comfort, connection, and relief from stress and anxiety. Coco, the cafe’s emotional support dog, plays a meaningful role in this environment and has helped countless customers manage emotional well-being.

For many customers, Coco is not a novelty but a source of calm and reassurance. Some individuals visit Zen Cafe specifically because of the comforting presence Coco provides. The cafe has taken cleanliness and safety seriously, implementing thoughtful precautions to ensure a hygienic and welcoming environment for everyone.

Recently, Zen Cafe has been threatened with fines and possible closure following a complaint regarding Coco’s presence. Removing Coco would fundamentally change the nature of the cafe and eliminate a vital source of emotional support for the community it serves.

If a person is uncomfortable with the presence of a dog, they are free to choose not to visit Zen Cafe. However, that personal preference should not result in the shutdown of a small business that is clearly benefiting the public and acting in good faith to maintain cleanliness and safety.

We respectfully urge the health inspector and relevant authorities to:

1) Recognize the positive mental health impact Coco has on Zen Cafe’s patrons
2) Consider reasonable accommodations or alternatives rather than punitive action
3) Work collaboratively with Zen Cafe to find a solution that allows the cafe to continue to serve its community

Closing Zen Cafe or forcing the removal of Coco would harm both the business and the many individuals who rely on this space for emotional relief and connection.

We ask that you would please respect the role Coco plays at Zen Cafe and allow this community focused establishment to continue operating without threat of closure and additional fines.

I have personally experienced the transformative power of Zen Cafe and its beloved resident, Coco the emotional support dog. 

Zen Cafe is not just a business, but a vital community resource that plays a critical role in supporting the emotional and mental health of countless individuals. Coco, with his gentle and calming presence, has become an integral part of that support. His ability to comfort and bring joy to those who visit is invaluable, making Zen Cafe an irreplaceable haven in our community.

Despite the immeasurable support that both Zen Cafe and Coco provide, they are currently facing challenges that threaten their existence. The potential loss of Zen Cafe would be devastating to the mental health and emotional equilibrium of many.

National surveys indicate that individuals seeking support for mental well-being are significantly more likely to succeed when they have access to safe spaces and therapy animals (American Psychological Association, 2022). By losing Zen Cafe, we will be losing an essential lifeline for mental health support.
