Protect youth mental health; lower usage/monitor social media

The Issue

Recognizing the influence of social media on the mental health of our youth, we support the recent essay published in The New York Times by the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy. As referenced by Dr. Murthy, “up to 95% of young people aged 13-17 report using a social media platform. Nearly two thirds of teenagers report using social media every day and one third report using social media “almost constantly.”

The use of social media platforms among youth has led to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. The pressures to conform, the fear of missing out, and cyberbullying are just some of the adverse effects documented in numerous studies. As trusted medical and community leaders, this essay acknowledges these challenges and we hope to advocate for meaningful change in how social media is used by our youth.

Our petition is a call for action to address these issues brought to light in our research.

  1. Raise Awareness: Increase public understanding of the mental health impacts associated with social media use among youth.
  2. Promote Responsible Use: Encourage platforms to implement safeguards and educational initiatives that promote healthier online behaviors.
  3. Support Research: Advocate for further research into the long-term effects of social media on mental health and well-being.
  4. Empower Parents and Educators: Provide resources and guidance to parents, educators, and caregivers on how to support youth in navigating social media safely.
  5. Engage Stakeholders: Collaborate with technology companies, policymakers, mental health professionals, and educators to develop evidence-based interventions.

By signing this petition, we affirm our commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that prioritize the mental health and well-being of our youth in the digital age. Join us in our commitment. Thank you for your dedication and your efforts to protect the mental well-being of our nation's youth.
