For the past decade or so, social media companies have encroached more & more on our rights. They claim this is in the name of “security.” They even say this is to keep their sites “kid & advertiser friendly.” A more likely explanation is that they want power & control, more power than our constitution allows our federal government. It’s common for harmless content to be deleted, restricted, or demonetized for “violating community guidelines;” that’s censorship! There’s a difference between a video talking about suicide rates & a video of someone telling another person to kill themselves. Another common experience is offhandedly mentioning a random product while a smart device happens to be nearby, & then suddenly getting that product marketed to you. These companies listen in on our conversations, track our location, keep a record of our search history, & then sell every bit of our data they can get their hands on. Were this the work of a single person, it would unquestionably be stalking. What’s worse is the PATRIOT Act, a law passed in the aftermath of 9/11, legitimizes these corporations’ claims by having given law enforcement unconstitutional levels of surveillance.

By signing this petition, you’re telling Congress to consider the following as an amendment: “Neither the government nor a company can ask a person for their age, I.D., legal name, or other personal information unless legally necessary. Furthermore, neither the government nor a company can monitor a person’s communications or internet history without a warrant. What’s more, a company cannot censor its employees or consumers in the same way the 1st amendment prohibits the government from censoring its officials & citizens.”
