We are living in an era where a simple click can lead a young person astray—from fake news to manipulated videos, the digital landscape is rife with deception. According to a report by Cybersecurity Ventures, cybercrime damages will cost the world $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, a stark indication of the growing threat. Furthermore, the Pew Research Center reports that 59% of U.S. teens have been bullied or harassed online.
These statistics paint a grim picture, not just in the United States, but globally. Young individuals, impressionable and still building their worldviews, should not be left vulnerable to these digital predators. We must take responsibility to ensure that our educational systems integrate digital literacy from a young age, empowering students to discern credible sources from deceitful ones.
Moreover, there needs to be a cooperative effort between governments, tech companies, and educational institutions to develop comprehensive and robust policies that safeguard young users.
