Women Matter. We Need a Royal Commission.

I am a woman.

I am a wife. I am a mother. I have a daughter. I have sisters. I have a mother.

Like every Australian, I love someone who could become the next headline.

This year, it feels like we have barely had time to grieve one woman before another name appears in the news. Another family shattered. Another child without a mother. Another community asking, “How did this happen again?” (News.com.au⁠)

In Australia, one in four women has experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner since the age of 15. On average, one woman is killed by a current or former partner every 11 days. (AIHW⁠)

We hold Royal Commissions when bridges collapse.

When institutions fail children.

When disasters expose systemic failures.

So why aren’t we demanding one when Australian women keep dying?

These women are not statistics.

They are daughters whose mums are still waiting for a phone call that will never come.

They are mothers whose children will grow up without them.

They are sisters, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

They should still be here.

A Royal Commission is the strongest investigative tool our nation has. It can compel evidence, expose systemic failures, hear from families and frontline workers, and recommend reforms that save lives.

This is not about politics.

It is about accountability.

It is about asking why the warning signs were missed, why opportunities to intervene were lost, and what must change so fewer Australian families have to bury the women they love.

Australia prides itself on looking after its mates.

Our women deserve nothing less.
