Protect Wildlife, Kids, and Neighbors on Stanton Street — We Need Speed Bumps!

The Issue

I am writing to express a pressing concern regarding the safety of Stanton Street, specifically the section between the intersections of Stanton Street and Brentwood Avenue and Stanton Street and Excalibur Drive. I kindly request your support in addressing this issue by advocating for the installation of speed bumps along this stretch of road.

Several critical factors highlight the need for this measure:

  1.          Wildlife and Pet Safety: The area has seen a troubling number of wild animals, including skunks, foxes, rock squirrels, being killed by vehicles (There are also deer in these streets). This not only affects the local wildlife population but also causes distress to pet owners and the community.

2.          Exercise Zone: This part of Stanton Street is a popular route for running, cycling, and walking (Thousand Steps Trailhead). Unfortunately, the absence of sidewalks means pedestrians and cyclists must share the road with motor vehicles, which is particularly dangerous given the current speed levels.

3.          Proximity to Schools and Temple: The area is close to a school and a Temple, with many children and families regularly crossing and walking along the street. The risk of accidents is heightened by vehicles often exceeding safe speeds.

4.          Lack of Public Lighting: The street suffers from insufficient public lighting, making it hazardous for pedestrians and cyclists during early morning and evening hours. Reduced visibility increases the risk of accidents, particularly with speeding vehicles.

5.          Road Design Challenges: The natural incline and curves along Stanton Street present significant visibility challenges for both pedestrians and drivers, increasing the risk of accidents. These road features, combined with frequent incidents involving wild animals, highlight the urgent need for speed control measures. To address these safety concerns comprehensively, I propose including Excalibur Drive and Sir Gareth Drive in the speed bump installation plan. Placing two speed bumps on Sir Gareth Drive and three on Excalibur Drive would be a practical and effective approach to improving safety and reducing accident risks in these areas.

I kindly ask for your support in bringing this issue to the attention of the appropriate city departments and ensuring that the necessary steps are taken to install speed bumps on Stanton Street between Brentwood Avenue and Excalibur Drive, as well as on Sir Gareth Drive and Excalibur Drive. Such a measure aligns with broader community safety goals and would be a valuable addition to traffic calming efforts in our community.
