The Issue

In the intricate and demanding world of healthcare, professionals who bravely stand up for patient safety and ethical medical practices deserve our utmost respect, not retaliation. My name is Natalie Henderson, a dedicated nurse from Louisiana, and I am speaking up for justice – not just for myself, but for all healthcare professionals who have faced repercussions for doing the right thing.

I have faced intense retaliation after voicing serious concerns regarding patient safety and procedural misconduct at River Place Behavioral, an institution meant to be a safe haven for those in need of mental health care. Instead of addressing these crucial safety issues, I found myself under the unjust scrutiny and retaliation of the Director of Nursing, Jason Krause. His actions have unfairly targeted me after I highlighted significant discrepancies in patient admitting processes – a step that should prioritize accuracy and patient well-being.

At the heart of the matter was the improper placement of armbands on psychiatric patients during the admitting process. Correct procedure is crucial in preventing potential errors and ensuring continuity of care. When I brought these issues to light, not only was my professional opinion dismissed, but I was accused of patient abandonment, a devastating blow to my dedication as a nurse, despite my diligence in conducting regular rounds even when other staff were negligent.

Racism within healthcare settings, too, is a severe concern. It taints professional environments and jeopardizes patient care. The racism I faced from Jason Krause is reflective of a deeper, systemic issue that must be addressed proactively, not only for the benefit of healthcare workers but for the safety and trust of the patients we serve.

This petition calls for River Place Behavioral to conduct an independent investigation into the retaliatory practices wielded against whistleblowers within their facility. It is an appeal for the protection of rights for those who speak out, adhering to their ethical duty to provide safe, high-quality care. Furthermore, systemic racism and misconduct need to be rooted out to maintain the integrity of healthcare environments.

Support my petition to safeguard the brave voices of healthcare workers who, despite facing personal and professional risks, choose to advocate for essential changes. Your signature will not only stand as a pillar of support but will also push towards fundamental reforms necessary to create safe, inclusive health facilities where the well-being of patients and staff is a priority. Please join me in fostering a healthcare system that values transparency, accountability, and justice by signing this petition today.
