Protect Waiʻoli Stream Habitat and Cultural Site from Overdevelopment: Hanalei, HI

The Issue

Thank you for your support in signing this petition to preserve and protect Wai'oli Stream from overdevelopment.

This proposal is to conserve the half acre tract located at 5-5528 Kuhio Highway, northeast (makai) from Wai'oli bridge on Kauai.

It is vitally important we hui together to preserve this culturally important land area, as it hosts an ancient Hawaiian burial site, and should be made accessible to lineal and cultural descendants.

Wai’oli is a significant habitat and  ecosystem home to the protected state bird, Hawaiian nēnē, black-crowned night heron, Hawaiian short-eared owl (pueo), kōlea, and many more species.

It is a watershed buffer zone and needs our protection to preserve water quality and water supply. Our efforts will also conserve land in order to reduce erosion, floods, landslides, and runoff; and allow for open space to remain in perpetuity, conserving the land for recreation and scenic values.

The land is privately owned and in escrow due to close fall of ‘24. We hope to align with the prospective new owners and share how a gated, private or investment development does not serve our community, and collaborate together to steward the area.

We want to protect this land, as it is not within financial reach for local housing, and is not an optimal site for any housing, as it is a flood zone; rather than overdevelop our sacred open spaces, we would like to see this land protected.

We believe it is our kuleana to preserve Wai'oli Stream from further development and degradation, ensuring the wellbeing of future generations through our regenerative leadership efforts.

Only through community and united action can we create a more ecologically sustainable and culturally sound world.

Please support our community by signing this petition. It will be presented to the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Fund Commission, prospective stewards or conveyors, and will initiate formal protection through public and private land trusts.
