Every day, thousands of veterans wait months, or even years, for the disability benefits they earned through service. These delays cause financial hardship, stress, and uncertainty for the men and women who sacrificed for our country.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has begun experimenting with artificial intelligence and other automation tools to help reduce the historic backlog and speed up claim routing and intake, but these technologies are still emerging, and there is real concern that machines alone can’t ensure fairness and accuracy in benefits decisions. Veterans should not be left waiting for benefits because of bureaucratic inefficiency or untested systems.

Veterans deserve timely, fair access to the benefits they are entitled to. With the overall average VA disability claim taking 138 days to process, many veterans face long waits that deny them the support they need and deserve. Unreasonable delays add unnecessary financial and emotional strain on those who have served.

We call on Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and policymakers to:

• Streamline the VA disability claims process.
• Ensure fair treatment for all veterans applying for benefits.
• Provide sufficient resources and staff to handle claims efficiently.
