Growing up on the White Oak River in Cedar Point, duck hunting has always been more than just a hobby to me—it's a family tradition and an integral part of our community culture. Some of my fondest memories are early mornings on the river, watching the sun rise as we waited for the first signs of ducks approaching. However, a recent proposed law threatens to change this cherished way of life.

The Cedar Point town council has introduced a law that would require duck hunters to stay 1,200 feet away from private residences. While I understand the intent to ensure safety and peace for residents, this distance is excessive and may practically eliminate some of our most loved hunting spots along the river. It’s a move that could inadvertently toll the end of a long-standing tradition cherished by countless families like ours in the region.

The White Oak River and its surroundings are not just hunting grounds; they're a historical and cultural touchstone for the Cedar Point community. Duck hunting not only contributes significantly to local traditions but also supports the regional economy through permits, equipment sales, and tourism. Moreover, waterfowl hunting is a regulated activity that ensures the balance and health of duck populations, contributing to conservation efforts.

I am urging the Cedar Point town council to reconsider the requirements of this proposed law. Instead of a blanket distance rule, we should explore more effective and specific measures that ensure safety while preserving our traditional hunting practices. Possible solutions could include implementing more precise guidelines on shot direction and enhanced education programs for hunters to ensure all safety protocols are followed.
