Protect TPS for Ukrainians amidst ongoing conflict
The Issue
When the war in Ukraine forced me to flee my homeland, I sought safety and stability for my daughter and me in the United States. Here, we have found a community where we feel sheltered and accepted. I am a Ukrainian mother, working diligently and paying taxes, contributing to the economy of this great nation, while my daughter attends school and grows up in an environment of peace and opportunity.
The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program has been a lifeline for thousands of families like mine who have sought refuge from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Under TPS, we have been granted the ability to live without fear of deportation, at least temporarily, while building a new life of hope and promise here in the U.S. However, with the expiration of TPS looming over us, the apprehension is unbearable.
Returning to Ukraine at this point is simply not an option. The war continues to devastate regions across the country, threatening lives and making it exceedingly dangerous to return. The streets of my town, which once resonated with laughter and the bustle of everyday life, are now echoing with explosions and unrest. Losing TPS would cast my family and countless others into immeasurable uncertainty, stripping us of the security we have come to depend on.
The U.S. has always stood as a beacon of freedom and compassion, offering sanctuary to those in need. Extending TPS for Ukrainians during this volatile period is a testament to these values, safeguarding vulnerable families and allowing us the dignity to continue our lives without the constant fear of what tomorrow might bring.
We are not asking for charity. We are asking for continued stability so we can contribute to society with the peace of mind that we will not be forcibly returned to hazardous conditions.
