Petition: Protect the Vulnerable Regent Parrot – Safer Roads in the Ouyen Region
We, the undersigned, are calling on the Mildura Rural City Council to take urgent action to help protect one of Victoria’s most vulnerable native bird species — the Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus monarchoides).
The Ouyen region and surrounding areas of the Mallee are vital habitat for the Regent Parrot, a species listed as vulnerable under both state and federal conservation laws. These stunning birds are known for their bright yellow plumage and fast, low flight patterns. Unfortunately, their behavior makes them particularly susceptible to vehicle strikes — especially along rural and dirt roads where drivers often travel at high speeds.
In recent months, multiple Regent Parrot deaths have been witnessed or recorded as a result of road collisions — a preventable loss for a species already struggling with habitat loss and environmental pressures.
We are requesting that Mildura Rural City Council:
1. Install warning signage in known Regent Parrot crossing zones around Ouyen and key Mallee habitat areas.
2. Implement reduced speed zones in high-risk areas during peak activity times (particularly early mornings and late afternoons).
3. Introduce speed monitoring measures, including mobile or fixed speed cameras on dirt roads near nesting and foraging sites.
4. Work with wildlife experts and local ecologists to identify critical zones for protection- such as Parallel Rd, Ouyen.
These are simple, cost-effective steps that could make a significant difference in preventing unnecessary deaths and preserving the fragile population of Regent Parrots in Victoria.
Every bird lost is one step closer to extinction — and one we could have prevented.
Please join us in urging the council to take action before it’s too late.
