Protect The UK Countryside, Villages and Small Towns from Overdevelopment

The UK countryside is one of our nation's greatest treasures. It isn't just beautiful scenery - it provides peaceful places where people can escape the pressures of everyday life, improve their mental health, exercise, and reconnect with nature. Our villages and small market towns have unique histories, communities, and character that should be protected, not swallowed up by endless housing developments.

The countryside is also home to countless birds, mammals, insects, and other wildlife. Every woodland, hedgerow, meadow, and field provides essential habitats for nature. As more green spaces are lost, wildlife loses its home. Humans need homes, but so do the animals and birds we share this country with.

I believe the Labour Government must do more to protect UK's countryside, villages, and small towns from unnecessary development on greenfield land. While new homes are needed, they should not come at the expense of our natural environment, farmland, and rural communities.

Before building on open countryside, developers should be required to prioritise converting empty offices, disused commercial buildings, abandoned industrial sites, and other brownfield land into homes. Across England there are thousands of underused buildings that could be transformed, reducing pressure on our precious green spaces while helping to regenerate towns and city centres.

Once countryside is built on, it is gone forever. We cannot replace ancient landscapes, wildlife habitats, productive farmland, or the peaceful character of rural England with concrete and brick. Future generations deserve to experience the same beautiful countryside that we enjoy today.

We need planning policies that strike a better balance - delivering the homes our country needs while protecting nature, preserving wildlife, safeguarding farmland, and maintaining the identity of the UK villages and small towns.

Please join me in calling on the Labour Government to strengthen planning protections, prioritise the redevelopment of existing buildings and brownfield sites, and stop unnecessary development on the UK countryside.

Together, we can protect our wildlife, our heritage, our wellbeing, and the landscapes that make England special—for ourselves, our children, and generations to come.

🏡 Protect existing communities
Don't allow villages and historic small towns to be swallowed by continuous housing development.

🏢 Reuse before building new
Convert empty offices, vacant commercial buildings and suitable brownfield sites before releasing more countryside.

🌿 Protect wildlife and green space
Development shouldn't automatically mean sacrificing farmland, wildlife habitats and countryside.
