Protect the Smithsonian: Uphold its mission and values

Protect the Smithsonian: Uphold its mission and values
The Issue
The Smithsonian Institution is one of America's greatest treasures—a network of museums and the National Zoo enjoyed by millions each year. Founded in 1846 through a generous gift from British scientist James Smithson, the Smithsonian was created to spread knowledge and inspire curiosity for everyone, no matter who they are.
Recently, the Smithsonian Board of Regents and Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch began reviewing potential changes to some exhibits and programs at President Trump's request. While presidents naturally take interest in our nation's institutions, it's essential the Smithsonian stays independent and continues to reflect accuracy, diversity, and education without political pressure.
Whether it's seeing the famous Hope Diamond, discovering Amelia Earhart's historic plane, watching the playful pandas at the zoo, or learning about our nation's journey at museums like the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Smithsonian offers something amazing for everyone, especially families and kids exploring together.
We’re asking Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch and the Smithsonian Board of Regents to publicly reaffirm the Smithsonian’s mission and values; ensure the Smithsonian’s curators, researchers, and educators can work independently; and protect the Smithsonian’s commitment to presenting history, science, and culture accurately, openly, and free from political influence.
The Smithsonian belongs to all Americans, not just one administration or political viewpoint. Let's protect this national treasure together for future generations.
