Protect the rights of therians and furries in schools
The Issue
I am a therian. We are individuals who identify with a non-human animal while maintaining a human form. In a school environment, being a therian or a furry can lead to harassment, bullying, and misunderstanding, often because people do not understand what it means to identify this way.
I have personally experienced this prejudice. I once proudly wore a tail to school, only to be punched and grabbed by someone who mocked my identity. I am not alone in facing such discrimination; many therians and furries endure similar treatment every day. Schools, which should be sanctuaries of learning and acceptance, often become places of dread and discomfort. Instead of feeling encouraged to express themselves and explore their identities, many students find that their mental health suffers due to frequent bullying.
This is why it is essential for educational institutions, especially middle schools, to adopt policies that explicitly protect the rights of therians and furries. Educators and school authorities should be trained to understand these identities and foster an environment of respect and inclusion. This can include seminars on diversity, establishing support groups, and creating zero-tolerance policies against bullying based on identity.
Research shows that about 95 out of 100 online comments about therians and therianthropy are negative, despite the fact that there are over 100,000 therians worldwide. Additionally, 60% of furries also experience bullying.
Studies indicate that inclusive school environments improve academic outcomes and mental health for all students. By standing together to demand change, we can ensure a future where no student is bullied because of their identity.
Schools give you all sorts of assemblies about not bullying, not calling names, and not cursing. But why do they actually not monitor it more? This is stupid. If schools want to be a safe place where kids can express who they are, then they had better make sure no one gets bullied. Oh, so what? 1 in 20 kids get bullied? That's because they let it happen.
Even though I may be only a 6th grader, I urge you to join me in asking school boards to protect the rights of therians and furries in schools. Please sign this petition to help create safe and inclusive educational spaces for every student.
