Protect the Revue Cinema, Toronto's Longest-Running Cinema

Protect the Revue Cinema, Toronto's Longest-Running Cinema
The Issue

-----
The Revue Cinema has recently announced they may be forced to close their doors as of July 2024 due to stalled negotiations with the building owner, who is demanding the disbandment of the non-profit Revue Film Society, a 50% rent increase, and to take over operations of the cinema (with the goal of making it for-profit).
As a former employee of the Revue, I have witnessed firsthand the importance of this cultural institution. A sanctuary for movie-lovers, this space is indeed more than just an affordable cinema. It is a cultural hub, a forum for community interaction and inclusivity, and a custodian of our city's vibrant arts scene. Toronto's oldest running cinema has been defining the cinematic experience in our city for many years, and cannot be allowed to disappear due to the demands of an unreasonable, profit-driven landlord.
We ask that Councillor Gord Perks, MPP Bhutila Karpoche, Mayor Olivia Chow, MP Arif Virani and any/all elected representatives who care about Toronto step up in support of the Revue to ensure this not-for-profit theatre never closes.
The Revue Cinema is not just a vital part of Toronto's cultural fabric because it shows films. It fosters a sense of community, and provides a venue for countless film festivals and local events. It also employs a team of hardworking, and dedicated cultural workers who will lose their livelihood if nothing is done.
I urge everyone to help save this cultural institution, which contributes to an inclusive, vibrant, community-driven environment that enriches our city. Let us stand together to protect the Revue Cinema from landlord greed, and preserve it for future generations. Your voice matters; your signature counts. Please sign this petition now. Let's keep the Revue Cinema's doors open.
