Protect the Ontario Science Centre as a Heritage Building

Protect the Ontario Science Centre as a Heritage Building
The Issue
The Ontario Science Centre, which opened its doors in 1969, holds a special place in my heart and the hearts of many Ontarians. As one of the world's first interactive science museums, it has been instrumental in promoting science education and literacy across the Greater Toronto Area for decades. Its unique features, such as Canada’s only Challenger Learning Centre (built in partnership with NASA), an indoor rainforest, and Toronto’s only remaining public planetarium, are irreplaceable treasures that we cannot afford to lose.
However, the province's proposal to relocate this beloved institution to the Ontario Place grounds threatens these unique attributes, as it doesn't provide sufficient space or funding to rebuild these features in the new location. This move would also strip away the Ontario Science Centre's beautiful natural site nestled within the Don Valley - a feature that adds immense value to the Centre's biology and ecology programs - and turn the location over to private developers. Moving the Ontario Science Centre would also eliminate an important cultural and educational hub from the neighbourhoods of Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park and Don Mills, impacting equity and opportunity for local residents.
Previous petitions drew significant media attention and helped to ensure the Centre's relocation was a ballot-box issue during the 2023 Toronto mayoral election. During her campaign, Mayor Olivia Chow promised to prevent this move. We now call upon her and our government officials to uphold this promise and protect our cherished Ontario Science Centre by fully designating it as a heritage building under Ontario law. While the Ontario Science Centre is listed on the city's heritage register, full designation would best reflect its significant cultural heritage value. The Architectural Conservatory of Ontario and the Toronto Society of Architects have both issued statements supporting this designation.
Additionally, we urge the government to promptly release funds for necessary maintenance and repairs at the Ontario Science Centre so that future generations can continue enjoying this beacon of scientific discovery just as we have done for over five decades.
