Protect the Montagu Pavilion: Say NO to the Proposed Development!

The Issue

We urge the Development and Planning Commission to protect the historic Montagu Pavilion, its courtyard, and the surrounding area from inappropriate development. The Pavilion forms a vital part of our community’s heritage, and any development that does not respect its historical and cultural significance must be opposed.

The Montagu Pavilion is more than just a building; it is a cherished landmark that embodies the rich history and cultural heritage of our community. Its architectural beauty and historical significance make it an irreplaceable part of our local identity.

Although the application is yet to be validated by the Development and Planning Commission (DPC), WDF Properties and WSRM Architects—known for large-scale, high-rise, concrete developments—have submitted an application for the Montagu Pavilion site. The development will consist of 6 studio apartments, 24 apartments, and 42 studios. Such a development would be grossly out of character with the Pavilion’s surroundings and would undermine its cultural significance.

We believe that preserving the Montagu Pavilion, its courtyard, and its surroundings is critical for fully appreciating the pavilion, not just as a building but also as a reminder of our community's past. The loss of this historic site to an inappropriate development would be a tragedy that could never be undone.

We therefore call on the Development and Planning Commission (DPC) to:

  1. Reject any development proposals that would compromise the integrity of the Montagu Pavilion, its courtyard, or the surrounding area.
  2. Grant protected heritage status to Montagu Pavilion to ensure its preservation for future generations.
