Urgent Action Required to Protect the Miami Beach Coral Reef and Ensure Visitor Safety!
The Issue
The Miami Beach Reef and its Visitors must be protected!
There is a magnificent reef right off South Beach. It was nearly destroyed in the 1950s (dredged as fill for "beach re-nourishing"). Now, 70 years later, while other reefs are bleaching, this reef is thriving and needs our protection.
Call to Action: Move the Buoy Line Further Out Beyond the Reef, Establish a Miami Beach Marine Park, Support FDEP's Kristin Jacobs Coral Aquatic Preserve, and Seek NOAA National Marine Sanctuary Designation for the Miami Beach section of the reef.
To protect the Miami Beach coral reef and ensure the safety of visitors, we urgently request that the buoy line be moved out beyond the reef. This action will:
- Reduce Physical Damage: By moving the buoy line farther from the reef, we can minimize the risk of boats and anchors accidentally striking and damaging the coral.
- Enhance Visitor Safety: A clear demarcation of the reef area will help prevent accidents and ensure that visitors are guided safely away from sensitive areas.
- Preserve the Ecosystem: Protecting the reef from further degradation will help preserve its biodiversity, ensuring that it continues to provide essential ecological services.
- Promote Sustainable Tourism: By safeguarding the reef, we can continue to attract eco-conscious tourists while promoting responsible and sustainable practices.
Why this petition matters
- Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. They support a vast array of marine life, including over 25% of all known marine species, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. These vibrant underwater structures are often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea" due to their incredible biodiversity. Coral reefs provide numerous benefits, including:
- Biodiversity: Reefs are home to a multitude of species, many of which are not found anywhere else on Earth. This biodiversity is crucial for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.
- Coastal Protection: Coral reefs act as natural barriers, absorbing wave energy and reducing the impact of storms, hurricanes, and coastal erosion. They protect our shores and help to maintain the integrity of our beaches.
- Economic Value: Coral reefs contribute to local economies through tourism, fishing, and recreation.
- Climate Regulation: Reefs play a role in carbon sequestration, helping to regulate the Earth's climate by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere.
The Miami Beach coral reef, which is part of the only coral reef system in the continental United States, is extra special because you can dive this reef directly from the beach. No expensive boat trip is required to access the reef. It is shallow, just between 15-25' underwater. This makes it affordable family fun for locals and tourists alike, and accessible as a living ambassador for all Florida's corals.
The scientific community is excited that in the era of dying reefs and coral bleaching, this reef is resilient and defying the odds. The City of Miami Beach and the County are both excited to discover a new economic engine with family-friendly activities.
Many Endangered Species, including hard corals, conchs, and even Manatees have been documented. It is populated by gorgeous tropical fish, baby nurse sharks, rare corals and eye-popping marine life.
Threats Facing Coral Reefs
Unfortunately, the Miami Beach coral reef, like many others worldwide, is under severe threat from various human activities and environmental stressors, including:
- Climate Change: Rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification are causing coral bleaching, where corals lose their vibrant colors and essential symbiotic algae, leading to weakened reefs and increased mortality rates.
- Pollution: Runoff from land, including fertilizers, pesticides, and other pollutants, can harm coral reefs by promoting the growth of harmful algae and reducing water quality.
- Physical Damage: Human activities such as boating and anchoring can cause physical damage to the fragile coral structures.

We respectfully urge you to take immediate action to move the buoy line beyond the reef and implement additional protective measures, including establishing the Miami Beach Marine Park, support FDEP's Kristin Jacobs Coral Aquatic Preserve, and designating the Miami Beach reef as a NOAA National Marine Sanctuary to ensure the health of this critical ecosystem and the safety of all who visit it.
We, the undersigned, respectfully submit this petition to urge immediate action to protect the Miami Beach coral reef, a vital marine ecosystem.
