Dear supporters, it’s been a while since I updated you last. A lot has been going on behind the scenes but unfortunately no good news. In the last 18 months, the Circular Head Council has refused to take any decisive action to protect the devils on Woolnorth road. It has been verified that 158 devils have died since 2020.

Please keep sharing the petition to keep the issue on the agenda

Our issue was in the Australian and The Times:

“Locals who have documented the devil deaths, and pleaded unsuccessfully for reduced speed limits and enforcement, fear the carnage may threaten the key population.

With state government so far resisting calls to lower the 100kmh limit along Woolnorth and part of West Montagu Road, they are pleading for intervention by federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek.

“This population is unique in that it doesn’t have the facial tumour disease and yet we are just smashing them at a rate of knots,” local wildlife carer Alice Carson said. “We had 28 dead in two weeks. It’s nothing to see three a day. There are probably more getting hit but dying later in the bush."

North West Tasmania is home to the last remaining healthy population of devils in the wild. Yet, the local council refuses to care. I have been tirelessly campaigning for action and finally setup a working group with representatives from the companies that have their factories and setups near Woolnorth road.

I’ve finally been able to get the companies under one roof and asked for action, but yet again no commitment from mostly everyone.

We need to stop heavy vehicles on that road after dark - I am hoping for a commitment from the companies to at least ensure truck drivers keep their limit to 80 kmph. The industries can be part of the solution.

Please keep sharing the petition. Your support is invaluable to ensuring we don’t lose this iconic species.
