Protect the Guga Harvest on Sula Sgeir
Protect the Guga Harvest on Sula Sgeir
The Issue
For centuries now, a small group of men from Ness in the Isle of Lewis have gone to a small island 45 miles north of the Butt of Lewis called Sula Sgeir to harvest a small batch of guga (young gannet).
The catch size has generally been around 2,000 but last year this was lowered to 500 to maintain and protect sustainability.
The guga is despatched quickly and humanely (within seconds).
The age of the guga at the time of harvesting is comparable to other poultry. All the guga harvested are consumed.
A petition went before the Scottish Parliament calling for this harvest to be banned. We believe the basis for this call for banning the harvest to have been completely misrepresented with a campaign based on misinformation.
This petition is calling for the annual guga harvest to be preserved and the current provisions made within the law to be retained and preserved as it currently stands, with no changes.
The guga is a legitimate food source, much like the fish from the sea, livestock & poultry from the land.
