The Issue

Living in Horsham has been a dream for us, and one of the things that makes this town so special is the balance between the convenience of living here and the beautiful countryside and green spaces that surround it.

When we moved to Weald Close, we were delighted to find the open field and countryside immediately behind our home. This is not simply an “empty piece of land”. It is a beautiful, peaceful green space enjoyed by local residents and an important habitat for wildlife. We regularly see birds and other wildlife here, and the openness of the field is an important part of what makes this area feel special.

A proposal has now been submitted to build 21 houses on this field (planning application DC/26/0954).

If approved, this would permanently transform an open countryside landscape into a residential development, with roads, buildings, parking and associated infrastructure replacing an important area of green space.

We understand that Horsham needs new homes. However, housing need should not mean that every remaining area of open countryside is suitable for development. This particular site has significant landscape and ecological value and forms an important part of the countryside setting of Horsham.

The loss would be permanent. Once this open field has been built upon, the green space, wildlife habitat and sense of openness it provides cannot simply be recreated elsewhere.

We are asking Horsham District Council to refuse planning application DC/26/0954 and protect this important piece of countryside.

This is about much more than the view from our homes. It is about protecting the character of Horsham, preserving valuable green infrastructure and wildlife habitat, and ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the natural spaces that make this town such a wonderful place to live.

If you value the countryside and green spaces around Horsham, please sign this petition and help us protect the field south of Athelstan Way. 🌳
