The Issue

For more than 70 years, the Leamington Flyers have been an integral part of the fabric of our community. Generations of players, families, volunteers, and fans have built a proud tradition of junior hockey in Leamington. The Flyers are not just a hockey team, they represent the identity, spirit, and community pride of our town.

Recent developments regarding the Highbury Canco Arena schedule for March 2027 have raised serious concerns among residents and fans. A decision by the Municipality of Leamington to approve a non-hockey event that would require the removal of the arena ice beginning March 10, 2027, during what could be the Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs, places the Leamington Flyers in a position where they may be unable to host playoff games in their home arena.

This situation highlights an ongoing and deeply concerning conflict between the Municipality and the Leamington Flyers organization. Regardless of where responsibility may lie, the continued public disagreement and lack of cooperation between the parties threatens the stability and long-term future of junior hockey in Leamington.

The Flyers have been part of this community since 1953. Losing the team, or placing its future in jeopardy, would represent a significant loss for our town, our youth, and the many volunteers and supporters who have sustained this program for decades.

We, the undersigned residents, fans, and supporters of the Leamington Flyers, respectfully call on:

The Municipality of Leamington and the Leamington Flyers organization to immediately engage in constructive dialogue and reach a solution that ensures the Flyers can continue to play their playoff games at Highbury Canco Arena.

Specifically, we ask both parties to:

• Work collaboratively to ensure arena availability for potential OJHL playoff games in March 2027
 • Prioritize community organizations that have long been part of Leamington’s identity
 • Commit to a transparent and cooperative relationship moving forward
 • Place the interests of players, fans, volunteers, and the broader community ahead of ongoing disputes

This petition is not about taking sides.

It is about protecting a community institution that has brought pride and opportunity to Leamington for over seven decades.

We urge both the Municipality and the Flyers organization to set aside differences, end the public infighting, and work together to secure the future of junior hockey in Leamington.

Our players, fans, and community deserve nothing less.

Enough is enough. The time to resolve this is now.
