The Issue

A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction halting further expansion and ordering the winding down of a massive immigration detention center built in the middle of the Florida Everglades.

The site—dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz”—has sparked national outrage from environmental groups, tribal leaders, and human rights advocates who say the facility violates environmental laws and threatens sacred land.

Constructed hastily without proper environmental review or tribal consultation, the facility is already damaging wetlands and endangering protected species. And yet, Florida officials have made clear they plan to expand it.

Unless public pressure keeps building, this ruling could be overturned, ignored, or delayed.

We are calling on the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency to enforce federal environmental laws and halt all expansion;

The Trump administration to permanently shut down the facility and restore the damaged portion of the Everglades at the Dade-Collier site.

The Everglades is not a no-man’s-land. It is a critical ecosystem, a cultural landmark, and a fragile environmental treasure. For decades, both Republican and Democratic leaders have promised to protect and restore it. This is their moment to prove it.

The Miccosukee Tribe, conservationists, and legal experts have made their voices clear: this land is sacred. It cannot be sacrificed for detention beds and political theater.
