Protect the Esopus Creek from Overdevelopment & Pollution!

The Issue

Community members in Lake Katrine and Glenerie Lake Park in Ulster County are sandwiched between the Esopus Creek and the CSX tracks.

Ever since Central Hudson deforested 28+ acres on Rt. 9W next to the tracks in 2020, we have experienced:

  • Increased stormwater that flows under the CSX train tracks, concerns of compromising the train berm and potential train derailment on Katrine Lane or Glenerie Boulevard;

  • Massive flooding in our yards now with each storm;

  • Erosion of the Esopus Creek from muddy discharges released from the Ashokan Reservoir, with impacts to sinking homes and loss of mature growth trees to stabilize the banks;

  • Air and light pollution from 9W;

  • Loss of birds and creek wildlife;

  • A recent hydraulic oil spill by Central Hudson on January 11, 2024 into a Federal Wetland that leads into the Esopus Creek

We are terrified by the environmental harms that have been unleashed on our community at the hand of our own local representatives over the past four years through a series of inadequate environmental reviews. We are terrified by a potential train derailment in our community.

We do not want to become the next East Palestine.

Today, Bread Alone wants to expand their operations on an adjacent parcel which would increase stormwater, adding to an already major problem.

Following the 2020 census, our neighborhood was added to the state’s Environmental Justice and Disadvantaged Community areas, and we urge the Town of Ulster Town Board to use every tool they have to protect us from further distress.

Please sign our petition to demand the Town of Ulster Town Board:

1. Keep all stormwater created by the Bread Alone expansion on-site;

2. Request a third party cumulative impact analysis during the Bread Alone environmental review process;

3. Addresses the ongoing Central Hudson stormwater harms to our community and pollution to the creek.
