Protect the Druze Community in Syria from Sectarian Violence and Political Repression
Protect the Druze Community in Syria from Sectarian Violence and Political Repression
The issue
In the wake of Syria’s political collapse and the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, the country has plunged deeper into chaos—and the Druze minority is now facing an alarming wave of sectarian violence, misinformation campaigns, and targeted attacks.
Over the past weeks, deadly clashes have erupted in towns like Jaramana and Ashrafiah Sahnaya, near Damascus. A falsified audio recording, maliciously attributed to a Druze cleric, was used to incite violence and hatred, leading to at least 44 deaths and widespread unrest. The cleric has denied making the statement, but the damage is done. Civilians are suffering.
The Druze community, largely concentrated in the Suwayda region, has long tried to remain neutral in Syria’s ongoing conflict. Yet they are now caught in a volatile struggle between extremist militias and unstable transitional powers. While some have called for autonomy, others are pleading for international protection—highlighting a deep sense of vulnerability and abandonment..
We, the undersigned, call on the United Nations, international human rights organizations, and global media outlets to:
- Immediately investigate and document the targeted violence against Druze civilians in Syria.
- Provide emergency humanitarian aid to affected regions, especially Suwayda and the Damascus suburbs.
- Pressure transitional Syrian authorities to guarantee the protection and rights of all religious and ethnic minorities.
- Support international monitoring of disinformation campaigns that incite sectarian hatred.
- Amplify the voices of Druze leaders and civilians calling for peace and autonomy.
- Issue a public statement condemning the targeted attacks on Druze civilians.
The world cannot remain silent as another vulnerable community is pushed to the edge. Please sign and share this petition to demand urgent action for the Druze people of Syria.
