PROTECT THE CORPUS CHRISTI BAY: A demand for better science on desalination

The Issue

Desalination in the Corpus Christi Bay has the potential to cause major harm to our local coastal resources. Yet, the City of Corpus Christi has done very little to assess what effects its desalination projects will have on the environment.

Much like we use hurricane modeling to anticipate where a hurricane will go, far field modeling uses the best available science to anticipate where the heavy brine from desalination will go. Will it accumulate in the ship channel? Will it cause hypoxia or dead zones? We deserve to know.

So far only the first 400 feet of mixing and transport of desal waste from the Inner Harbor plant has been modeled by the City. All we are asking is for the City to do what they should have done a long time ago, that is to address these concerns by doing a far field model for the entire bay system all the way out to the Gulf of Mexico.

Please share and sign the petition if you want to help protect the bay!

The timing of this study couldn't be anymore urgent. The City of Corpus Christi plans to start construction on its $757 million Inner Harbor plant in 2025. It's important that everyone understands what the actual impacts will be before construction begins. Otherwise, we risk wasting a ton of resources on a plant that may harm the community more than it helps it.
