The Issue

As a Minnesota native, it’s heartbreaking to see the habitat I grew up with in jeopardy. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA), with its pristine waterways and unspoiled natural beauty, holds a place in the hearts of many, including myself. This remarkable wilderness is not just a part of Minnesota's landscape; it's a vital piece of our state’s heritage and the most visited wilderness area in the country. Generations have found solace and adventure here, from paddling and fishing to camping under the stars. Its crystal-clear lakes and lush forests offer countless opportunities to connect with nature and embrace the great outdoors.

The proposed Twin Metals mine, which is on stolen Anishinaabe land, threatens this treasured wilderness with irreversible pollution and habitat degradation. The toxic runoff and potential for catastrophic environmental disasters pose a significant risk to the BWCA’s fragile ecosystem. Pollution from mining activities could devastate the clean waters, harm wildlife, and forever alter the natural landscape that so many of us have come to love and depend upon. This wilderness is not only an emblem of Minnesota’s natural legacy but also a critical habitat for numerous species of plants and animals.

We urge the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to deny the Twin Metals mining permit and prioritize the preservation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The implementation of strong oversight and accountability measures is essential to safeguarding the BWCA from environmental harm. We must ensure its protection for future generations to experience and cherish just as we have.

Protecting the Boundary Waters is about more than just preserving a place; it’s about maintaining a way of life and a connection to the land. It's about ensuring that the rich heritage and pristine beauty of Minnesota's most beloved wilderness remain intact for our children and grandchildren.

Please join us in calling on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to halt mining in this precious region. Sign this petition to show your support for the long-term preservation of the BWCA and send a clear message that we value our natural treasures and demand action to protect them. Your support can make all the difference in safeguarding this irreplaceable wilderness for generations to come.
