Protect the Big Bash League from privatisation and foreign ownership

The issue

The Big Bash League (BBL) is an iconic Australian sporting event that has captured the hearts and minds of millions of fans across the country. It is more than just a cricket competition; it embodies the spirit and culture of Australia.

However, there are alarming reports of privatisation and potential foreign ownership of BBL teams, which threatens to change the very fabric of this national competition.

Since 2011, the BBL has represented the best of Australian sportsmanship, fostering homegrown talent and providing thrilling entertainment to families and fans. Local ownership and management have ensured that it remains accessible to all Australians, maintaining reasonable ticket prices and inclusive community events. Foreign ownership could prioritise profit over these values, leading to increased costs and a shift away from developing local talent.

Evidence from other sporting leagues around the world suggests that when leagues are privatised or fall under foreign control, local communities often suffer. Ticket prices surge, local players get sidelined in favour of international stars, and the league often loses its local identity.

Currently, the BBL contributes to the Australian economy by generating jobs and boosting tourism. Privatisation could potentially divert investments and profits to foreign entities, reducing the economic benefits that currently stay within our communities.

To protect the integrity and identity of the BBL, we must stand together and ensure it remains in the hands of those who appreciate its value to Australia. We call upon the governing bodies to reject any proposals for the privatisation and foreign ownership of the BBL, preserving it as a national treasure for future generations.

Sign this petition to keep the Big Bash League Australian and ensure that its future reflects our values and supports our communities.
