Thank You! to all of you who wrote to the Islands Trust to support a Trust Policy Statement (TPS) that prioritizes environmental protection. Our campaign was successful. The Trust received over 100 pieces of correspondence, most of which supported prioritizing protection of the natural environment. There were so many responses that adoption of a new TPS has been delayed until after the Trust election October 17th.
We distributed the petition with signatures to the Trust Council and the Minister of Municipal Affairs. But the petition will continue to circulate until a new TPS is adopted.
I addition to protecting the environment, Friends of the Gulf Islands is working for affordable housing that is sustainable with respect to water supply, sewage disposal and protection of native ecosystems and is secured with a legally binding housing agreement to guarantee affordability.
Yet most of the current trustees do not appear to be voting for these priorities. Before the election for new trustees, we will be circulating a questionnaire to candidates and publish the results on our website. We urge you to review candidate responses and vote in October. Most owners of property on the trust islands can vote, even if they don’t live here full time. Information on who can vote is on our website at friendsofthegulfis.ca.
