Protect Texas Communities from Data Center Overload

The Issue

Texas is on track to become the country’s top market for data centers within just a few years. As artificial intelligence booms, companies are flocking to Texas for cheap land, abundant natural gas, and limited regulations.

But there's a cost—and Texans shouldn’t be the ones left paying it.

According to a 2026 report by Bloom Energy, power demand from data centers in Texas could jump from 8 gigawatts to over 40 gigawatts by 2028—enough to power millions of homes. At the same time, national data center power demand is expected to nearly double by 2028. Developers are increasingly building private natural gas power plants to bypass grid delays, adding to fossil fuel emissions at a time when Texas is already facing extreme heat, drought, and blackouts.

While innovation is important, we cannot let profit-driven expansion put our grid, air quality, or communities at risk.

We are calling on the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and state lawmakers to:

  • Require full environmental and energy impact assessments for new large-scale data centers
  • Prohibit onsite power plants that bypass grid oversight without public review
  • Ensure data center developers contribute to grid reliability, not just take from it
  • Increase transparency around data center locations, energy usage, and emissions

This is not about stopping progress. It’s about making sure that Texas residents don’t face rolling blackouts, higher utility bills, or dirtier air just so AI companies can keep expanding unchecked.

If we don’t act now, the energy demands of a few could jeopardize the stability and sustainability of the whole state.

Sign this petition if you believe Texans deserve a say in how energy-hungry data centers operate in our state.
