Protect Tanjung Bungah beach from commercial development

Protect Tanjung Bungah beach from commercial development
The Issue
Save Tanjung Bungah — Stop the “Sore Thumb” Development!
Edit: We truly value and are very grateful for your support and involvement. Please note, however, that the monetary contribution offered through this webpage does not go directly to our cause. It only helps to make the petition more visible online.
While we deeply appreciate your willingness to support us financially, we believe this may not be the most effective way to help at this stage.
Tanjung Bungah, one of Penang’s most cherished coastal communities, now faces an imminent threat from a massive commercial project .
• The project was approved without proper environmental assessment or public consultation, contradicting Penang’s own sustainability commitments (Penang2030 and Green Agenda).
• The development will:
o Destroy precious green areas and mature coastal trees
o Eliminate public access to a community beach
o Increase erosion, flooding, and urban heat along the shoreline
o Displace wildlife, including sea otters, eagles, and dusky leaf monkeys
o Damage residents’ wellbeing by removing beloved space for recreation, mental health, and daily balance
• This coastal zone is one of the very few places in Penang where natural vegetation still meets the sea — an irreplaceable ecosystem that protects the island’s coastline.
Once this habitat is gone, it’s gone forever.
We, the residents and concerned citizens of Penang, call on the Chief Minister of Penang to:
o Suspend and revoke the commercial approval for Lot 4658 (“Sore Thumb”)
o Protect and restore this coastal ecosystem as a public green space
o Uphold the principles of Penang2030 — sustainability, inclusivity, and transparency in planning
