Recent figures from the municipal animal shelter in Alanya have raised further questions about how the current system is operating.
According to data obtained through an official information request, the shelter recorded the following figures for 2025:
1,308 dogs taken into the shelter
194 dogs adopted
552 dogs recorded as dying from “natural causes”
Based on these numbers, a substantial proportion of the dogs entering the facility did not survive.
Until recently, municipal shelters in Turkey functioned primarily as treatment and rehabilitation centres, where dogs were treated, sterilised and then returned to their territories. Following legislative changes in 2024, many municipalities have begun using shelters to contain dogs for longer periods, placing increased pressure on facilities that were not originally designed for long-term housing.
The figures emerging from Alanya have therefore prompted calls for greater transparency about shelter conditions, veterinary capacity and mortality records.
Your support for this petition is helping keep attention on these issues. If you are able, please consider sharing the petition so others can learn more about why reform of the current system is being called for.
