Stonehenge is not a stage.
It is not a playground.
It is not a backdrop for selfies.
It is one of the most important ancient monuments on Earth.

During the Summer Solstice, thousands of people gather at Stonehenge to witness the sunrise. This is a powerful and meaningful tradition, and it should be respected. But what I witnessed was heartbreaking.

People were touching the stones.
Leaning on them.
Climbing over them.
Sitting against them.
Crowding around them as if they were ordinary objects in a public park.

They are not ordinary objects.

These stones have stood for around 5,000 years. They were placed there by people whose world we can barely imagine. They have survived time, weather, war, religion, empire, tourism and modern life. But they may not survive our carelessness.

Every hand placed on the stones matters.
Every person leaning against them matters.
Every climb, every push, every uncontrolled crowd movement puts pressure on something that can never be replaced.

Stonehenge belongs to all humanity — not only to the people who happen to be standing there on one night of the year. It belongs to our children, their children, and generations who will come long after us.

We are not asking to stop Solstice celebrations. We are asking for them to be protected from becoming an uncontrolled festival around one of the world’s most fragile ancient monuments.

There must be a strict protective perimeter around the Stonehenge stones during Solstice and all large public gatherings.

This perimeter should:

Stop people touching, climbing, leaning on or sitting against the stones
Keep crowds at a safe and respectful distance
Protect the stones, their surfaces and the rare lichens growing on them
Allow people to celebrate the Solstice without physically damaging the monument
Include clear barriers, signage, stewards and proper enforcement
Preserve Stonehenge as a sacred ancient site, not a temporary festival structure
Access does not have to mean physical contact.
Respect does not require touching.
Celebration does not justify damage.

If someone climbed on a museum artefact, leaned against an ancient statue, or touched a fragile prehistoric object behind glass, people would be horrified. Stonehenge deserves at least the same level of protection.

Once damage is done, it cannot be undone.
Once a stone surface is worn, stained, cracked or weakened, no apology can restore 5,000 years of history.

Stonehenge has survived for millennia. Our generation must not be the one that treats it carelessly.
