The Issue

I, along with thousands of other South Carolinians, call on our state lawmakers to reform how arrest records and background checks are handled.
Currently, innocent people who are arrested—but never convicted—have their mugshots, charges, and personal information publicly posted and sold by background check companies. This leads to job loss, social stigma, and financial devastation before any day in court.
This system is broken. It violates the principle that you are innocent until proven guilty.
We demand that South Carolina:

Ban the public posting and distribution of mugshots and arrest records until conviction.
Require background check companies to update their reports promptly and not treat charges as convictions.
Protect gig workers and employees from automatic deactivation based on unproven charges.

For justice, fairness, and dignity—sign this petition today.
