The issue

As someone who understands the importance of accessible technology for people who are blind or have low vision, I am deeply concerned about the potential ban on smart glasses at both the national and local government levels across Australia. Smart glasses are not merely a tech gadget; for people who are blind or living with low vision, they are an important form of assistive technology that can enhance safety, independence, and participation in everyday life.

These assistive devices provide real-time information that helps individuals navigate their environments, perform daily tasks, and maintain social engagements with greater ease. The possibility of restricting access to such vital technology due to concerns about misuse or privacy is alarming. Instead of penalizing those who rely on smart glasses for their independence, we should focus on creating comprehensive policies that address privacy concerns while protecting the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities.

Statistics from the Australian Network on Disability indicate that approximately 4.4 million people in Australia live with some form of disability. For many of these individuals, technology like smart glasses can be transformative. Rather than imposing blanket bans, we need targeted measures that ensure the responsible use of such technology without compromising its benefits for those who need it most.

We propose the following actionable solutions:

1.    Punish misuse. Use existing legislation to act against the minority who are misusing the technology.

2.    Enforce the law. Regulate conduct, enforce existing privacy, surveillance and publishing laws and set sensible restrictions in sensitive settings

3.    Do not ban independence. Do not impose a blanket ban on the technology and do not offer a disability exemption as a solution. Support assistive technology that allows people with disabilities to live with confidence and independence.

By enforcing the law against misuse, we uphold the rights of both individuals and the broader community without denying essential support to people who are blind or have low vision. I urge policymakers, local councils, and citizens to support this petition to keep smart glasses accessible for the people who depend on them. Stand with us to protect both independence and privacy.
