For centuries, the monasteries of Kosovo and Metohija - including the UNESCO-protected sites of Visoki Dečani, Gračanica, the Patriarchate of Peć, and Our Lady of Ljeviš - have been living sanctuaries of faith and Europe’s medieval heritage. Listed as World Heritage in Danger since 2006, these are active houses of worship under ongoing pressure.

Escalating Violations on the Ground

Detailed documentation from the Diocese of Raška-Prizren (July 2026) reveals a systemic campaign targeting these holy sites:

• Illegal Incursions: Forced entries and attempted seizures, including at the Church of St. Archangel Michael in Rakitnica.
• Denial of Worship: Obstruction of clergy and believers accessing sacred sites.
  Unpunished Vandalism: Destruction and theft occurring without judicial accountability.
• Zone Violations: Illegal construction and heavy machinery operating within legally protected Special Protective Zones.
• Historical Revisionism: Coordinated political and digital campaigns attempting to erase the documented Serbian Orthodox identity of these monuments.

 

The Legal Framework: UN Resolution 1244 must be upheld.

This is not a local real estate dispute -it is a direct breach of international law.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 remains the binding legal mandate for the international presence in Kosovo. It explicitly dictates the protection of all communities, their rights, and their historic cultural and religious heritage.

Ignoring these violations undermines the authority of the UN Security Council and the global rule of law. Protecting these sites requires a full return to and strict enforcement of UN Resolution 1244.

What We Demand

We call directly upon the UN Security Council, UNESCO, EU, OSCE, and KFOR to:

• Fully Reaffirm and Enforce UN Resolution 1244: Return to the binding international mandate as the supreme legal framework for protecting sacred sites.
• Guarantee Security: Ensure immediate physical protection for clergy, worshippers, and church property.
• Enforce Special Protective Zones: Stop all illegal construction and political rallies near UNESCO sites.
• Hold Violators Accountable: Conduct independent investigations and prosecute all acts of vandalism, break-ins, and land seizures.
• Reject Revisionism: Stop political attempts to rewrite the historical and canonical identity of Serbian Orthodox heritage.

Stand for International Law
History cannot be rewritten by force.

Religious freedom cannot depend on ethnicity.

UN Resolution 1244 is not optional.

 

UNESCO World Heritage requires more than recognition - it requires the rule of law.
