Following the very welcomed announcement last week of €9 million in funding for the essential and urgent works needed to stabilise and secure the Iveagh Markets, today it has been reported that this repair work will not start until sometime in late 2024. Read news report here
Back in February of this year, Dublin City Council announced it would undertake emergency works to secure and preserve the roof, which was badly damaged by a storm in 2021, to prevent further deterioration of the building’s fabric. This work has yet to begin. So with the announcement last week of €9 million in funding to DCC it was hoped this emergency work would start sooner rather than later and that this iconic, protected building would be secured before another winter and another storm could inflict even more damage.
However, it looks as if the Iveagh Markets will have to weather yet more time unprotected before the 'urgent' emergency repair works start.
Back in 2019, An Taisce identified the Iveagh Markets as one of Ireland's top 10 most-at-risk buildings. Without action now will it make it through another winter unprotected?
