Great news today that the government will provide €9 million in funding to Dublin City Council so emergency remedial works can progress and further deterioration of the Iveagh Markets building can be halted.

This is wonderful news but the work needs to start sooner rather than later. The building has been so neglected for so long that another winter could cause irreparable damage if essential conservation work on roof does not begin as a matter of urgency.

It is a stepping stone in the right direction. However, it has been estimated that repairing the building alone could cost up to €30 million. So more funding and initiative will be needed into the future.

Restoration is one issue, meaningful local and public consultation on the future of the Iveagh Markets another!
