Protect Residents and Children from Chemical Fumes at Venice on Rose Apartments. Venice, CA

Protect Residents and Children from Chemical Fumes at Venice on Rose Apartments. Venice, CA
The Issue
UREGENT: PLEASE SIGN BEFORE BUILDOUT BEGINS Families with young children live directly above the commercial space at Venice on Rose Apartments, managed by Greystar Real Estate Partners. We recently learned that Greystar has approved a lease for a chain nail salon to move into this space. As anyone who has walked past a nail salon knows, these businesses are known for using products that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as acetone, toluene, and formaldehyde-releasing agents, and phthalates. These substances are linked to developmental and respiratory harm, especially in children, whose bodies are still developing. Even with ventilation systems, VOCs can migrate through floors, walls, and shared air systems in mixed-use buildings—Ventilation does not eliminate risk when sensitive populations are directly above the source. When residents signed leases at Venice on Rose, they agreed to accept possible food odors and general mixed-use nuisances—not exposure to chemical fumes known to impair childhood development and hormonal health. We are calling on Greystar to immediately halt this lease and work with the salon owners to relocate to a dedicated commercial space where their business can thrive without endangering residential families. This location, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and wellness-focused community, is not appropriate for a high-VOC business directly beneath apartments housing babies and children. Please help us protect our kids’ right to clean air in their own homes. SIGN NOW to ask Greystar to reverse this decision. Protected Speech Notice: This message is a good faith expression of public concern regarding environmental safety, tenant rights, and zoning policy. It reflects constitutionally protected opinion and advocacy under the First Amendment and California’s anti-SLAPP statute (Code of Civil Procedure § 425.16). This petition reflects public concern based on well-documented research about chemicals commonly used in nail salons and the risks of inadequate zoning in mixed-use buildings.
