The Issue

As a resident of Quinnington, Harare, Zimbabwe, I have witnessed the illegal utilization and damage of our precious wetlands. These wetlands are pivotal in our ecosystem especially as we approach a sensitive time in climatic changes. We must act now to protect surrounding nature and the public. Zimbabwe is a signatory to the 1971 Ransar Convention on Wetlands therefore it is an obligation that the biodiversity, human life and surroundings are protected in the utmost highest regard.

Our local councils, municipalities, government organizations, the State and House of Parliament need to be made aware that these actions are not only illegal but also detrimental to our environment. Wetlands play an essential role in maintaining water quality by filtering pollutants and providing habitat for wildlife (source: World Wildlife Fund). In Zimbabwe alone, over 10% of the country's biodiversity is found within these ecosystems (source: Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority).

The destruction of these wetlands threatens this biodiversity and disrupts natural processes that contribute to clean water supply and climate regulation. It is crucial that we take immediate action to prevent further damage.

We urge all relevant authorities to enforce laws protecting our wetlands from illegal activities. We also call on them to educate the public about the importance of preserving these ecosystems for future generations.

Please sign this petition today if you believe in safeguarding Quinnington’s wetland areas for us now -and for those who will come after us.
