We believe it is time for TikTok to take responsibility and create a safe environment that promotes inclusivity, respect, and protects its plus size creators.

TikTok has become a platform where millions of users express themselves creatively and connect with others worldwide. However, it has also become a breeding ground for anti-fatness. Plus size creators are often subjected to derogatory comments, hateful messages, and even targeted harassment solely based on their appearance.

It is essential to recognize that body positivity should not be limited to specific body types or sizes. Everyone deserves equal respect and support regardless of their physical appearance. By allowing such harmful behavior towards plus size creators to persist unchecked, TikTok is perpetuating harmful stereotypes and contributing to low self-esteem among individuals who do not conform to societal beauty standards.

According to an article published by Healthline in 2021 (source: healthline.com), studies have shown that exposure to weight-based discrimination can lead to negative psychological effects such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, disordered eating behaviors, and reduced physical activity levels among individuals who experience it. This highlights the urgency for platforms like TikTok to actively combat weight-based discrimination.

We call upon TikTok's management team:

1. Implement Stronger Moderation Policies: We urge TikTok's management team to strengthen their moderation policies specifically targeting body shaming content directed towards plus size creators. This includes promptly removing offensive comments or videos that promote hate speech or discriminatory behavior.

2. Provide Supportive Resources: Create resources within the app dedicated specifically towards supporting plus size creators who face body shaming. This could include mental health resources, educational content promoting body positivity, and guidance on how to handle online harassment.

3. Collaborate with Plus Size Advocates: TikTok should actively engage with plus size advocates and organizations to gain insights into the experiences of plus size creators on the platform.
