Petition updatePROTECT PACIFIC GROVE’S SCENIC COASTAL OPEN SPACEURGENT! STOP HIGH DENSITY HOUSING IN PACIFIC GROVE’S SCENIC COASTAL OPEN SPACE!

We need your help to stop high density residential development near the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse. Please sign our petition and make public comment to the City of Pacific Grove by October 2, 2023, the sooner the better (more info below).

The recently released draft of Pacific Grove's Housing Element provides a stark reminder that one of the most historically significant and beautiful areas in the city, and the state—the rocky coast and rolling dunes at the southern entrance to Monterey Bay known as the Point Pinos Lighthouse Reservation—continues to be under threat by those unaware of, or ignoring, its historic and scenic importance.

The City of Pacific Grove’s proposed plan to meet the California state mandate for increased housing would rezone land that is currently zoned for open space-institutional land use adjacent to the Point Pinos Lighthouse to R-4, the highest density residential use. This rezoning would include 1352 Lighthouse Avenue where the historic NOAA/Navy building is located. This site includes sand dune habitat, endangered species, and the spectacular Ray Troll mural. It is sacred to the Indigenous peoples.  It is one of the most historically significant properties in our community. High density housing would forever change the character of our scenic coastline.

Rezoning to R-4, as proposed by the City, would give the east coast developers who own the land the ability to build a much larger structure(s) covering up to 50% of the lot as compared to the current 3%, in the highly scenic and historic area overlooking the Great Tidepool.

According to the City’s own draft plan, survey responses show, “A clear majority of community members do not want to see any open space and park land redeveloped, or even considered.”

Join us in voicing opposition to this rezoning and help us stop the dense housing that would be built in this scenic open space on Pacific Grove’s spectacular coast.
