The Issue
Protect Oxenhope's Wildlife, Environment, and Community.
A peaceful and environmentally important area of Oxenhope village is under threat from a proposed development that would permanently alter the character of the local landscape.
While residents are not opposed to the refurbishment and conversion of the existing mill into new homes, recent plans go far beyond restoring the current site. The proposal includes the excavation and development of an additional area of land that serves as a vital habitat for local wildlife.
Additionally, the homes are not as affordable as initially advertised and would be incredibly difficult for young families, locals, or anyone on a average salary to afford.
Even before news of these plans came through, some residents were already advertising their homes for sale but are having increasing difficulty doing so.
The village also simply just doesn't have the infrastructure to support over 22 brand new homes, 44 cars (two spots per house) or the space on the roads for all the added traffic and that's not mentioning plumbing which would likely require a lot of digging up additional areas for pipes and wiring.
There is also only one Co-op and school within the village which simply can't accommodate 22 additional families and not to mention no general practice located in the area.
This is likely due to the potential disruption to peace in the area and the nature that attracted current residents to the area in the first place.
The green space is home to a diverse range of birds, insects, mammals, and reptiles, all of which rely on this habitat for shelter, feeding, and breeding. The destruction of this area would have a significant impact on the local ecosystem and biodiversity that makes Oxenhope such a special place to live.
The proposed building site also borders a stream that flows through the village from the local reservoir. Construction activity, waste, and surface runoff pose a serious risk of pollution to this watercourse, potentially affecting wildlife, water quality, and the wider environment.
Residents are deeply concerned by these plans and are calling for decision-makers to reconsider the proposal. We urge the protection of this valuable natural habitat, the safeguarding of our local waterways, and the preservation of the peace and tranquillity enjoyed by those who live nearby.
